CHINA LAUNCHES WORLD'S FIRST ELECTRONIC PLANE



BEIJING (PTI): China has made the world's first electric passenger aircraft that could be used in pilot training, tourism, meteorology and rescue operations, state media has reported.

The BX1E has a 14.5-metre wingspan and a maximum payload of 230 kgs. It can fly at an altitude of 3,000 metres.

The charging is completed within two hours, allowing a flight time of 45 minutes to one hour, at a maximum speed of 160 km per hour, Xinhua news agency reported.

The plane, which has received airworthiness certificate, was designed by Shenyang Aerospace University and Liaoning general aviation academy in the northeastern Liaoning Province.

The first two aircraft were delivered to Liaoning Ruixiang General Aviation Co., Ltd. on Thursday.

The aircraft can be used in pilot training, tourism, meteorology and rescue operations, the report said.

Each aircraft is priced at about one million yuan (USD 163,000). The number of orders for the aircraft has reached 28, the report said.

Indigo Exploring more slots for Gulf

With newer carriers focussing on overseas operations after the government relaxed 5/20 norms, leading Indian carrier, IndiGo that has traditionally focussed on domestic operations, is now eyeing on increasing foreign operations, especially to Gulf nations.

The airline is exploring for more flying slots to different Gulf nations with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), according to a top government official.

A senior airline official said as other newer carriers like AirAsia India, Vistara and GoAir are gearing up for overseas operations, IndiGo does not want to lag behind and so is exploring the best way out remain at the top.

The budget carrier owns over 40% of India’s domestic aviation market share and will add at least 18 more narrow-bodied planes to its current fleet of 122 aircraft by March 2017.

The airline has placed an order for 430 fuel efficient A320neo aircraft, which would add to its fleet in phases. Airline sources  said with this big number of deliveries the carrier cannot limit its operations within India.

”It cannot fly to far Europe, United States or Australia. And so their best bet is Gulf and south Asian destinations. This is where they are focussing...” said an official.

BABY BORN ON A PLANE MAY FLY FREE FOREVER

An unexpected new passenger decided to make its way into the world on board a Cebu Pacific flight from Dubai earlier this week after a woman reportedly gave birth mid-air, few hours after takeoff. One of the passengers, Missy Berberabe Umandal, shared her account on Facebook, writing that the Cebu Pacific flight attendants and two passengers who were nurses brought the expecting mom to the larger area at the front of the plane. “Congratulations to the first-time Mom and Grandma! This is something you don’t get to see every day. It only happens in movies, and we’re lucky to witness this miracle,” she wrote.

Though she was due in October, it was not only surprise for the woman but fellow passengers as well. “We only heard one semi-loud screech, and a few seconds later, there were tinier, cute screeches, and that was when we knew the baby was born. Luckily, she only had to push ONCE,” wrote Umandal. “Moments later, the woman got up to go back to her seat, baby in arms,” she wrote. The plane did an emergency landing in India to ensure the baby’s safety.

To ensure the baby’s safety, the flight was diverted in India making it 18 hours of travel instead of nine. However, according to Umandal there were no complaints and the baby was given free Cebu Pacific flights for life.  Many Asian airlines like Thai Airways, Asia Pacific Airlines, and AirAsia are known to have offered up free flights for airborne newborns in the past.

The baby’s birthplace is technically India, but a United Nations Convention on International Civil Aviation (under the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness) says, a baby born on a ship or aircraft will take the “citizenship” of the airline. This means that baby will carry a Philippine passport and will have a Filipino citizenship.

THOMAS COOK PLANE HITS FLOCK OF 50 STORKS

The Thomas Cook Airbus A321 on its way to London was forced to make an emergency landing after colliding with ’50 storks’. A plane which was carrying 170 passengers from Banjul airport in Gambia, suffered damage to both engines and the landing gear when it ingested at least 13 of the birds shortly after taking off.

Writing on her Facebook page, Thomas Cook flight attendant Kayleigh Loveridge, from Newbury, described the ensuing safe landing and praised her fellow crew members for their calm attitude.

“We heard big bangs, felt the entire aircraft shake, shortly followed by one of our emergency commands from the flight deck. As crew we were briefed that we would be landing with one engine,”

“We emergency landed, rolled at a very high speed and for a very long time with the fire engines following our trail until the aircraft eventually came to a halt.”

“The entire time, it astounded me that as the flight crew and cabin crew, we were able to stay calm and control the situation. Not once did we hesitate at a command, or doubt ourselves.”

The Aviation Herald reported a number of birds were sucked into the engines – 13 were later recovered. The plane climbed to safety at 7,000 feet. Then entered a hold before returning to Banjul just 45 minutes after departing. It added the crew were forced to shut down one of the engines..

“The pilots and cabin crew responded extremely professionally according to their training and the aircraft returned safely to Banjul. The customers were accommodated overnight in Banjul and flown home on a different plane the following morning, while the damaged aircraft was repaired and arrived back in the UK last night. We apologise for the unavoidable delay to their return journey.”

Here’s Where Airplanes Go When They’re Retired

Airplanes can’t fly forever, so what happens when they’re retired? Many of them make a final flight to a disassembly specialist like Air Salvage International to be broken up for recycling or transport to a landfill. So if you want to be technical about it, you might say that all planes must die and go toward building another plane.

About 95% of planes can be recycled. How much can be recycled depends on a plane’s design and age. Most parts are sold to plane manufacturers. Other parts, though, receive more glamorous treatment: Air Salvage International has sold plane parts to be used in films such as World War Z and Star Wars. One lucky aircraft even starred in a fashion advert with a ballerina.

However, the interior plastic side panels and baggage bins can be problematic – especially in the wide-bodied Boeing 747s, because of their size.

Sometimes, these planes bring unexpected surprises – like the $4 million worth of cocaine that company engineers found inside an airplane bathroom in 2010. “The drugs were actually worth more than the value of the aircraft,” CEO and founder of ASI Mark Gregory said. Police seized the haul, possibly hidden during a trans-Atlantic flight from South America to Europe several months earlier.

Cathay Pacific planning more freight services to India

HONG KONG: Buoyed by solid growth in cargo traffic, Cathay Pacific Airways plans to increase frequency of its freighter services from here to Indian cities. 

The city-headquartered airline has freight services to six Indian cities and there are 25 freighter departures every week from India. 

A sign of significant market potential in the freighter segment, the carrier has seen an eight percent jump in cargo volumes in first nine months (January-September) of this year. 

"At this moment, we plan to optimise our network base in India and want to increase our frequency here," Cathay Pacific's General Manager (cargo sales and marketing) Mark Sutch told PTI here. 

The carrier provides freighter services from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The twice-a-week service between Kolkata and Hong Kong was launched in March last year. 

On whether the airline would be adding more destinations in India for its freighter services, Sutch said there are no plans as of now.

PM Modi's Rs 2,500 flight ticket plan: The devil in the details

The aviation minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju formally launched the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme that promotes regional connectivity and makes flying affordable for common man. The key highlight of the scheme is that airfares will be capped at Rs 2,500 for one-hour flights on regional routes. The intent of the government is to fly 300 million domestic passengers by 2022 from 85 million in 2015/16. The target looks ambitious; and hence, the capping of fares is necessary.

DGCA proposes new rules to enable import of foreign registered aircraft 

MUMBAI: India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, has proposed a new regulation which will enable operators to import foreign registered aircrafts and operate them on foreign registration with Indian crew. 
“This will also make the aircraft leasing environment user friendly,” the civil aviation ministry said in a statement. 
Currently, any aircraft that is being brought to India has to be first registered with the DGCA. The rule has been seen as a hurdle in taking planes on lease by airlines at a time when India is pushing for increased regional air connectivity. 

Exemption from this rule will make it easier for the lessor to take back the aircraft in case of a dispute with the airline operating the aircraft. The move reduces the risk of the lessors' planes getting stuck in India and hence may encourage them to formulate easier leasing contracts with lower rentals. 

IndiGo Sells Tickets From Rs.s 868 In New Offer

Budget carrier IndiGo is selling tickets from an all-inclusive Rs. 868 under a new promotional offer. IndiGo's offer is open till November 8, the airline said. And it is applicable on travel on select domestic sectors between January 11, 2017, and April 11, 2017.

IndiGo has not disclosed the number of seats available under the offer.

A check on IndiGo's website showed that the Rs. 868 offer, for example, is applicable on Jammu-Srinagar route for travel in mid-January next year.

Promotional offers by airlines have spurred a strong demand for air travel in India, which is among the fastest growing aviation market in the world.

Latest data from aviation regulator showed that local carriers flew 82.3 lakh people last month, a growth of over 20 per cent as compared to last year's levels. The sustained domestic air passenger traffic growth of more than 20 per cent over the past year comes against the backdrop of airlines coming out with attractive fares to garner increased market share amid stiff competition.

Budget carrier GoAir has also announced a Rs. 611 (base fare and fuel surcharge) offer to celebrate its 11th anniversary. The booking period for the GoAir offer will close on November 8. And it is applicable for travel period between January 11, 2017 and April 11, 2017, GoAir said.

Vistara may fly to Kolkata, Chennai next fiscal

Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, is aiming to add four to five destinations to its service in the next financial year.

“We will also increase frequency of our existing destinations. The choice of destinations would be based purely on route economics. While metros like Kolkata and Chennai are the natural choices, non-metros and tier-II cities also figure on our radar,” said Niyant Maru, chief financial officer.

Vistara was also keen to extend its services beyond Indian shores but was constrained by the 5/20 rule of the civil aviation ministry. According to this, only carriers with at least five years of domestic operations and a fleet strength of 20 are permitted.

Presently, Vistara has 293 frequencies across 11 destinations — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Goa, Guwahati, Bagdogra and Bhubaneswar. Vistara has seven aircraft and aims to expand it to 20 by 2019.

Varanasi would figure in its list of destinations from October 21.

On Thursday, Vistara announced the launch of operations from Bhubaneswar to Delhi. From October 5, it would run two daily flights connecting Bhubaneswar with New Delhi. It has chosen Bhubaneswar given the surge of investments to Odisha and the emergence of the city as a growing IT and education hub.

"We have seen a decent amount of bookings in the inaugural run. Overall, Vistara's occupancy rate is as good as some of the big operators", Maru claimed.

Though Vistara has carved a niche in the aviation space with the introduction of premium economy segment, lukewarm occupancy at its business class seats was worrying.

The airline operator, however, clarified it had no plans to reconfigure its seats despite the low load factor in business class. As of now, it offered 16 seats in business class, 36 in the premium economy segment and 96 under economy category. Vistara was operating its flights at around 60 per cent occupancy.

"We are keeping a close tab on our occupancy and the market dynamics. While we do not deny the possibility of trimming business class seats, we rule out any reconfiguration at least till the end of December this year. Our premium economy class with its features like extra leg space, segregated check in facility and sumptuous meals are drawing more corporate travellers and this could be the reason for the tepid response to business class", said a company spokesperson.

The NEOs are coming

Airbus A320neo (New Engine Option) with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 6799 to be registered as VT-ITC will take off from Toulouse, France for its delivery flight to New Delh in a short while from now.

This will be the first Airbus A320neo which market leader IndiGo will induct in its fleet. While earlier deliveries were routed via Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, the neo will make a non stop flight to Delhi.

This marks the start of the delivery of the 430 aircraft which the airline has on order. Go Air is the other airline which has 72 Airbus A320neo aircraft on order. While Air India and Vistara would also receive the neo in due course of time.

IndiGo, the second operator of this type worldwide will take delivery of this latest fuel efficient aircraft on Friday, 11th March 2016 at New Delhi. This will be the airlines 103rd aircraft in fleet.

The airline had seen its stock plummet below its listing price after informing the bourses about delay in delivery of fuel efficient Airbus A320NEO aircraft. On 29th February, the airline informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that it would receive 24 aircraft between March 2016 and March 2017, two short of what was initially promised by the manufacturer. Irrespective of this addition, the airline will go ahead and induct 07 older aircraft on lease from various lessors. The airline inducted VT-IDQ (MSN 2108), a 12 year old aircraft earlier this month.

The first of Airbus A320neo  was to be delivered in the last quarter of 2015, was plagued by engine issues. The Geared Turbo Fan (GTF) engine – Pratt & Whitney PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ PW1100G-JM is expected to reduce the fuel burn by over 15%. The delay in delivery was caused by teething issues with the engine, with reports indicating that the engine needed an idle time of 3 minutes after start-up before the aircraft would move on its own power. Qatar Airways & IndiGo had refused to take delivery till the hardware and related software problems were resolved, if reports are to be believed.

Eventually, Lufthansa then became the launch customer taking delivery of MSN 6801 which is registered D-AINA. Lufthansa has been operating the aircraft to Munich, Berlin & Hamburg from its Frankfurt hub.

It is unclear as to when IndiGo would start commercial utilization of the aircraft. The aircraft is also widely believed to have 186 seats, 3 less than what Airbus is now offering as its Space Flex concept where the galley is redesigned to accommodate higher seats. However, keep watching this space for more. The aircraft could well be configured in 180 seats.

Lufthansa upgrades Mumbai Frankfurt flight to Boeing 747-8I

After a few misses, German flag carrier Deutsche Lufthansa will upgrade its Frankfurt Mumbai service to a Boeing 747-8i, the newest variant of the venerable ‘Queen of the skies’. The upgrade will be effective from the Winter 2016 schedule which starts on Sunday October 30, which also happens to be the night of Diwali, the biggest festival in India.

The airline currently operates the 747-8i on the Frankfurt Bangalore route. The Frankfurt New Delhi route was up-gauged from a 747-8I to an Airbus A380.

The carrier appears to have finally secured the coveted Code-F slot which it was requesting for a long time. A single Code-F gate and a clash of timings with arch rival Emirates’ A380 flight ensured the Mumbai passengers missed out on this new aircraft fitted with the new Lufthansa business class and premium economy class cabins.

For the Mumbai route, Lufthansa will operate its Boeing 747-8 in a 364 seat configuration. Eight passengers in first class, 80 in business, 32 in premium economy and 244 in economy class. The first class on-board the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8i was considered to be “quietest first class cabin in the sky”.

Lufthansa phases out last Boeing 737

Lufthansa has phased out its last Boeing 737 on October 29 after completing a flight from Milan to Frankfurt. The German airline’s last aircraft, a 737-300, marks a historical move as the Boeing twin-engine narrow body has been in service for nearly 50 years. Lufthansa became the launch customer for the type February 19, 1965 when it ordered 22 737-100s. The first scheduled flights were domestic. The original Lufthansa 737-100 fleet operated 643.048 hours and made 836.446 takeoffs and landings before it was phased out February 25, 1982. Lufthansa had a total of 157 Boeing 737s in service over five decades, including the variants 737-100, 200, 200C, 300, 300 QC (quick change), 400 and 500. In the 1990s, up to 120 737s at one time had been in service with Lufthansa. The Lufthansa 737 fleet completed nearly 5.5 million landings. As of July 2016, Boeing said the 737 had amassed a total of nearly 13.500 orders worldwide. Lufthansa is replacing its 737s with an all-Airbus A320 family fleet.

India to become 3rd biggest aviation market by 2026: IATA

India will displace the United Kingdom to become the world’s third largest aviation market by 2026, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said.

IATA, which represents some 265 airlines comprising 83% of global air traffic, expects 7.2 billion passengers to travel in 2035, a near doubling of the 3.8 billion air travelers in 2016. These findings are part of IATA’s 20-year air passenger forecast.

“People want to fly. Demand for air travel over the next two decades is set to double. Enabling people and nations to trade, explore, and share the benefits of innovation and economic prosperity makes our world a better place,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

The forecast confirms that the biggest driver of demand will be the Asia-Pacific region. “It is expected to be the source of more than half the new passengers over the next 20 years. China will displace the US as the world’s largest aviation market (defined by traffic to, from and within the country) around 2029. India will displace the UK for third place in 2026, while Indonesia enters the top ten at the expense of Italy,” IATA said.
