New Delhi airport world’s best, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad in top 5

New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi international airport (IGIA) has been ranked as world’s best airport for the year 2014, in the airport service quality (ASQ) awards of Airports Council International, in the 25 to 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA) size category. The ASQ awards survey covers 34 key service areas including major categories such as access, check-in, security, airport facilities, food and beverage, retail and others.

The airport was ranked second for the preceding three years. Since 2011 IGIA was second to Seoul’s Incheon international airport, considered as the best airport in the world. This year Incheon moved in to the 40+ million category and displaced Guangzhou from the top five list.

IGI airport operated by the GMR led DIAL consortium is hub to four of the seven Indian carriers, Air India, IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet. All seven domestic and 51 foreign carriers operate to 54 domestic and 65 international destinations. It is expected to handle 40 million passengers this fiscal year ending March 31, 2015. The airport handled 100 million bags with an error rate of 1.67 per million bags, 60 times greater than acceptable global standards.

So what ground staff positions are available? Well how about becoming a passenger services agent? Passenger service agents, also known as passenger handling agents, are responsible for looking after passengers from when they book in, to when they board an aircraft. They also deal with passenger enquiries and help to resolve problems, which may involve finding alternative travel arrangements.

Passenger service agents work for ground services companies or for airlines. At the check-in desks they take on a range of responsibilities including checking passengers’ ID and tickets, allocating seats, weighing luggage and issuing boarding cards. At the boarding gate service agents check with the aircraft preparation team to confirm when the aircraft is ready, call passengers to board and check their boarding cards. They also have to deal with passengers who are late, or who may have been taken ill.


They also work closely with service agents, airport staff, security staff, flight dispatchers and airline operating staff such as cabin crew. They use computers in their work, and telephones and radios to communicate with colleagues. They will also use some mechanical equipment, as they usually check in luggage using a conveyor belt with a weighing scale.


There are of course other positions such as airport information assistants and terminal duty officers – so just because you haven’t landed your dream cabin crew job yet, there could be many other rewarding opportunities just around the corner.

 2. Terminal 3 @Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi)

Opened in 2010, a state-of-the-art and integrated future terminal, T3 is the 24th largest building in the world and 8th largest passenger terminal.

NEW AIRLINE TO TAKE WING SOON

Aviation professionals and investors are taking fresh bets by launching new airlines on regional and national routes while existing domestic carriers continue to bleed and remain mired in debt.

The first to take off will be Air Pegasus, promoted by Bengaluru-based ground-handling firm Deccor Aviation. Air Pegasus Managing Director Shyson Thomas said the airline would commence services later this month on regional routes in south India. Industry sources, however, expect the airline will start flying next month because the company is yet to receive a permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Air Pegasus received a no-objection certificate from the civil aviation ministry in 2012 but its plans were held up over difficulties in getting aircraft on lease following the shutdown of Kingfisher Airlines. The airline has now taken on lease a 70-seater ATR-72 and has tied up for two similar aircraft. Air Pegasus will connect Bengaluru with Thiruvananthapuram, Hubli, Chennai, Tuticorin and other cities in the initial stage. Other start-ups too are preparing for launch. Air One, which runs an air charter service, plans to finalise its aircraft leases by next month, while Flyeasy, a regional airline with a base in Bangalore, has begun hiring pilots and engineers for its proposed fleet of Embraer jets. Premier Airways headed by NRI engineer Umapathy Pinaghapani is slated to launch services next summer, according to a media report.

Air One and Premier Airways are among six companies that received no-objection certificates from the civil aviation ministry earlier this year. Flyeasy, promoted by ABC Aviation & Training, received its clearance prior to 2014.
"Civil aviation minister Ashok Gajpathy Raju wants to promote regional connectivity and flights to tier II and III cities and we aim to do that. We will have morning flight between Bangalore-Thiruvanthapuram and will also be the only airline now flying Bangalore-Hubli. We plan to utilise aircraft for 9-10 hours daily and will have a turnaround time of 20 minutes. All our flights may not be equally rewarding but we operate a smaller plane with 70 seats. So even if we have 40 seats full we will have close to 60 percent occupancy. Our operating costs too will be low,'' he adds.
